Bethala Kathalu publishes original Telugu fiction. Stories on this blog are creative reinterpretations of the classical Vikram-Bethala / Baital Pachisi frame applied to modern situations. Read this page carefully before treating anything here as advice or fact.

1. Fictional content notice

All modern characters, companies, organisations, products, ashrams, startups, hospitals (other than real institutional types like NIMS or Apollo referenced for cultural texture), apps, and specific incidents in posts on this blog are fictional. Any resemblance to real persons living or dead, real businesses, or real events is either:

  • Coincidental, or
  • An anonymised composite of multiple real situations woven into a thematic dilemma — never a recognisable portrait of a specific real person.

Names like "Arjun," "Priyanka," "Bharat," "KriyaAI," "Sahacharya Healthcare," "Praxis Health," "Vaiyukta Technologies," "Sūtra Labs" — all invented for storytelling.

Real institutions referenced for authenticity (DCGI, TSPSC, NIMS, NCRB, ASI, CARA, NHRC, SEBI, HSL Visakhapatnam, etc.) are mentioned as cultural anchors, not as parties to the fictional events depicted.

2. Classical source material

The frame story — King Vikramaditya carrying the corpse of Bethala (the vampire/ghost) through the cremation ground while Bethala narrates moral riddles — is from the public-domain Sanskrit work Vetala-Panchavimshati (and its later Hindi recensions, the Baital Pachisi). These works are over 1,000 years old and free of copyright.

However, English translations by Richard F. Burton (1870), C.H. Tawney (1880s), and modern academic editions are protected by their respective publishers' copyrights. This blog does not reproduce those translations. Every story here is a fresh retelling in original Telugu prose, sometimes departing significantly from canonical plots.

3. No professional advice

Important: Stories on this blog dramatise legal, medical, financial, marriage, inheritance, and religious dilemmas. Verdicts delivered by King Vikram in the stories are storytelling devices, not professional counsel.

If you face a real-world situation similar to one depicted in a post — a contested inheritance, a medical decision, a divorce question, a debt obligation, a legal liability, a mental-health crisis — consult a qualified professional:

  • Legal: a licensed lawyer in your jurisdiction
  • Medical: a registered medical practitioner
  • Financial: a SEBI-registered financial advisor
  • Mental health: a psychiatrist or licensed therapist (also: iCall 9152987821, Vandrevala Foundation 1860-2662-345, Tele-MANAS 14416)
  • Domestic violence / abuse: Women's Helpline 181, NCW Online ncw.nic.in
  • Cyber fraud / OTP scam: Cybercrime Helpline 1930
  • Suicide prevention: AASRA 91-9820466726, iCall, NIMHANS Helpline 080-46110007

Sai Kiran (pandrala), the blog author, is not a lawyer, doctor, financial advisor, therapist, or licensed counsellor. The blog is published as personal storytelling, not professional consultation.

4. Opinions are personal

Author commentary in first-person paragraphs (intros and signed author notes) reflects Sai Kiran's personal opinions at the time of writing. They do not represent the views of any employer, organisation, community, religious tradition, political party, caste group, or institution. Readers may disagree — disagreement is welcome in comments.

5. Sanskrit principles and dharmic framing

Each post invokes one Sanskrit principle (satyam brūyāt priyam brūyāt, dharmo rakṣati rakṣitaḥ, karmaṇyevādhikāraste, etc.) at the climax. These are interpretive applications, not definitive readings of scripture. Sanskrit scholars and students of dharmaśāstra may render them differently. The blog does not claim spiritual authority.

6. Cultural sensitivity

Stories engage themes of caste, religion, gender, region, and tradition. The blog's policy is:

  • No caste labels are applied to modern fictional characters in story bodies (titles may reference classical categories where the source tale uses them, but modern bodies do not perpetuate caste identification).
  • No religion-vs-religion conflict framing. Dharma is treated universally.
  • Tribal / Adivasi communities are depicted with research-grounded respect, not "noble savage" caricature.
  • Women characters have agency — they are protagonists with virtues and flaws, not props for male decisions.
  • Minority communities (Muslim, Christian, etc.) are depicted as full human beings, not stereotypes.

If a story falls short of these standards in your reading, please email pandrala@hotmail.com with the specific concern. I take such feedback seriously and revise where warranted.
