About — Bethala Kathalu · Charlieverse
100 original Telugu stories.
Why this blog exists
I grew up in Karimnagar listening to my grandmother retell Vikram-Bethal stories — the king carrying a corpse through the cremation ground, the ghost inside posing impossible moral riddles, the king answering with one Sanskrit principle. Those tales taught me that dharma is rarely about a clear right and wrong. It's about which of three defensible answers fits this exact moment.
Years later, working in Hyderabad, I noticed something — every startup failure, every family feud, every dinner-table argument I overheard had the same shape as a Betal vikram tale. Three people, three valid positions, one hard question. I started writing them down.
This blog is the result. 100 original Telugu stories where the classical Vikram-Bethala frame meets modern Telangana stakes — startup betrayals, software-engineer love triangles, aging farmers choosing between heir-techie and heir-teacher, whistleblower dilemmas, deepfake scandals, IVF disputes, climate migration. Every story ends with one Sanskrit principle answering a 2025 question.
What you'll find here
Voice: Telangana conversational Telugu with natural Tenglish code-switching. Not shuddha grāndhika, not Urdu-heavy Hyderabadi — just how a 30-year-old Karimnagar friend would actually talk to you at a tea stall.
Format: Each post is 1,800–2,800 words. The classical frame (King Vikram + ghost Bethal) wraps a modern story with 3–4 characters. The story ends with a hard question. The king answers, invoking exactly one Sanskrit principle from the seven I've worked with: satyam brūyāt priyam brūyāt, dharmo rakṣati rakṣitaḥ, karmaṇyevādhikāraste, vidyā vinaya sampanne, sukha-duḥkhe same kṛtvā, vairāgyam, satyam śaucham dayā kṣāntir ārjavam.
Audience: Telugu readers anywhere — Hyderabad, Telangana tier-2 cities (Karimnagar, Warangal, Khammam, Nizamabad, Adilabad), and the global Telugu diaspora. If you grew up hearing Vikramarkudu stories from grandparents, this is for you.
Charlieverse — the bigger project
Bethala Kathalu is one piece of Charlieverse — a Telugu storytelling universe I'm building. The same characters and dilemmas will eventually appear as audio dramas (Kuku FM, YouTube), shorter podcast episodes, and possibly long-form fiction. The blog is the canonical written archive — every story here can be expanded into audio.

About me, briefly
Sai Kiran (online: pandrala). Telugu native, Karimnagar-raised, Hyderabad-based. Day work in tech. Evening work telling stories. I write in Telugu because that's the language my grandmother told me Vikram-Bethal in. It's the language I argue in. It's the language dharma sounds right in.

What this blog is not
- Not professional advice — the dilemmas in these stories touch on legal, medical, financial, and family situations. Vikram's verdicts are storytelling, not counsel. For real-world dilemmas, consult a real-world professional.
- Not journalism — characters, companies, and specific incidents are fictional. Real institutions (DCGI, TSPSC, NCRB, NIMS, CARA) are referenced for cultural texture, not reporting.
- Not a translation project — these are original retellings, not translations of canonical Baital Pachisi editions. The classical Vetala-Panchavimshati is in the public domain; my retellings are my own.
Thanks for reading. The first story (Post 001) is a good place to start — it's about a founder who can't stop returning to failed startups, and a ghost who notices.
